The worst choices Ive made in this decade (and how I course corrected)

The worst choices Ive made in this decade (and how I course corrected)The worst choices Ive made in this decade (and how I course corrected)There are periods of time that can feel like an eternity and yet, feel like no time at all. They pass in a blink, a single blink that ushers in an entire lifetime of change, of goodness, of missteps, and of clarity. And theres bedrngnishing like connecting the dots in reverse to remind you that all those moments spent anxious, spent worrying, spent full on freaking out were actually getting you to exactly and precisely where you need to be.Its my favorite thing about reflecting, actually. When we take time to look back, we actually prove to ourselves that nothing can kill us (unless it does). And that every day is worth fighting for and that most worries are not.Im always the first person to lay the real details down, because I think sharing highlights doesnt really help anyone other than the ego of the person sharing. So when I looked at this ci rcled date on the calendar of my 30th birthday, I felt nostalgic for a decade that formed me in mora ways than I can possibly countmainly formed through the hard stuff, through the tough calls, through the wrong turns. Most of my best decisions were born out of my worst ones. So here I give you both.Accepting status quo. None of this is real not the stories were told, the expectations were given, or the rules were asked to follow. I will rage for women until all my dying days because the patriarchy is one giant lie sold to us as truth.Taking a job that looked good on paper but my intuition said abort. In reality, Id take the job 100 times over again and the miserable months that came with it to get to here. But it was a hard-earned lesson to never ignore your intuition.Feeling good that someone trusted me enough to tell me something they shouldnt have. Red flag Because as my mom always said, if theyre talking about someone else to you, theyre talking about you to someone else.Conv incing myself that connected meant successful. Connected to email, connected to work, connected to the phone, connected to social. Its the wrong path forward. Obsessive connection is a false blanket of hope that masks the real work which is to honor what shows up from the depths of our awareness when were connected to nothing but ourself.Doubting the timing. Because when you doubt the timing, youre doubting yourself. You will do things when youre good and ready. The universe will send things when youre meant to see them. You may not feel ready to start but should. You may not start but feel ready. Both are right. Because everything happens exactly as its supposed to. And really, none of us are ever ready.Expecting myself to fit into the mold. Screw the mold, and standards, and expectations, and shoulds. Being the most wildly expressed YOU is the birthplace of freedom.Forcing it. Forcing relationships. Forcing timing. Forcing myself. Forcing the work. Forcing anything to work.Life is nt meant to be forced. Love isnt meant to be forced. And its OK for things to occur with ease. Follow the ease (and I would have saved myself some major heartbreak).Operating from a place of lack. Like when you see someones success and doubt your own. When you see what they have and you obsess over your have-nots. When youre closed off and selfish instead of open and giving. Theres enough for everyone and everything to go around. The more you operate out of abundance the more bountiful everything in your life becomes. Tweet The more you operate out of abundance the more bountiful everything in your life becomes. maxiemccoy https//ctt.ec/9Iirp+Assuming they didnt want to talk about it. Whether its grief, hardship, obstacles, or awkwardness, show up for the people in your life even if they seem strong. Hold space for them. When they shut down, you show up.Isolating myself during my lows. Avoiding the people you love when youre struggling will only dig you deeper into the hole of your hardship. Deep human connection is key to feeling, to blossoming, to remembering what youre a part of and what youre made of LOVE.Im not sure theres actually any such thing as a bad decision. Everything in our life is a data point. Terrible becomes euphoric, eventually. Bad becomes good, eventually. The binary nature that we view our lives should be blurred, because everyone and everything we experience are just road signs leading us home. This article was originally published on MaxieMcCoy.

Top 3 attributes hiring partners look for in law students

Top 3 attributes hiring partners look for in law studentsTop 3 attributes hiring partners look for in law studentsLast Friday, I attended the NALP 2010 Diversity Summit, held at Northwestern University Law School in Chicago. The entire conference was interesting covering such topics as behavioral bewerbungsgesprching, non-partner alternatives to advancement, competency-based compensation, pipeline programs, and how generational differences inform the entire spectrum from recruitment to advancement but probably the standout session for me was the one led by Werten Bellamy, President of Stakeholders, Inc. Associate Competencies The Next Great Diversity Breakthrough or the Next Barrier to Diversity? According to Bellamy, Associate competencies are potentially the biggest breakthrough for diversity in the last 30 years. And in his detailed and engaging presentation, he proceeded to outline how such frameworks offer real routes to success for diverse lawyers. But in order to succeed, la w students and associates need to know how they will be judged, both in interviews and at subsequent stages of their careers. They need leid only to know what is expected of them, but also to understand why it is expected and how they can achieve it. At least some of the gap between diverse lawyers efforts and their success seems to stem from inadequate information or preparation on these points. The law firm reward system (hiring, evaluation, career progression) is a form of prepayment. Firms are making predictive judgments of what they believe associates will be one day. This represents a shift for law students, because in their academic lives rewards are based on past achievement. Bellamy cited a study that asked respondents to rank the relative importance of the following six attributes in hiringPositive attitudeWriting skillsResilience/work ethicAdvocacy skillsInitiativeAnalytic skillsWhile diverse lawyers ranked writing skills, advocacy skills and analytical skills highest, pa rtners said the most important attributes are a positive attitude, resilience/work ethic and initiative. Law schools should help students understand these gateway attributes and how theyve manifested themselves in their experience. These attributes are important to partners because they have relational value their presence suggests candidates have other, related attributes, while their absence suggests a lack thereof. For exampleInitiative suggests motivation, reliability, ability to juggle tasks and anticipate needs (conversely, if a student lacks initiative, its hard to see him as a go-getter). Positive attitude suggests the person is responsive, likeable, loyal, with ability to inspire and accept critique, and willingness to sacrifice. Resilience suggests the candidate can work under stress, adapt, imagine possibilities, persevere. These attributes are also difficult to teach, whereas advocacy, writing and analytical skills are easier to train. Law students need to understand th e interview from the partners perspectiveThey consider past experiences. They have a reference point (i.e., a standard against which they measure performance). Students should know what this reference point is. They expect that their preferences are already known to the candidates. Students need to know what these preferences are. According to Bellamy, these are the questions that concern an interviewing partnerCan this person attract my investment? What will it feel like to work with this person? Does this student want my life? to make the same sacrifices? Can this student positively engage and contribute to the firm culture? Can this person earn my trust? Tomorrow, more thoughts on diverse associates and competency frameworks.- posted by vera

The Benefits of Customer Relationship Management

The Benefits of Customer Relationship ManagementThe Benefits of Customer Relationship Managementkundenbeziehungsmanagement is an acronym that stands for customer relationship management. It describes the strategy that a company uses to handle customer interactions. One example of a common CRM strategy is the rewards card program that many supermarkets offer. In this case, the store gives its customers a free card that grants them access to special deals and discounts when they swipe their rewards card during checkout. However, that card also registers and tracks everything the customer buys. This allows the store to create an extremely detailed customer profile based on the purchasing habits of the customer. Armed with that information, the store can then offer its customers targeted coupons- as well as other programs- that ends up motivating customers to buy more products from that particular store. And CRM is not just for grocery stores every business- from vintage dress companies to car dealerships- can benefit from a CRM program. CRM Has a Long History Many CRM software and/or service packages exist only to help companies manage the customer relationship process. Salespeople tend to think of these computer programs as the be-all and end-all of CRM. However, CRM has existed for much longer than the computer. CRM has been around, in one form or another, for as long as people have been buying goods. That said, computers have greatly enhanced the customer relationship management process because the key to good CRM is uncovering and storing information about customers. The more a company knows about its customers, the better it can manage its valued relationships- as evidenced by the supermarket rewards card example. Additional Benefits CRM systems also have the benefit of seeing how well each sales team is doing- and track the performance of the products they sell and the campaigns they implement. Also, each sales manager has access to information abo ut whether their teams are achieving their sales goals or not. The ability to map out an entire customer journey- from the first contact to the point of sale- is another huge benefit to a business because it allows for accurate forecasting when it comes to determining customer need. Also, given todays love affair with social media, being able to view acustomers social media activity (especially their likes and dislikes), businesses can gauge customer sentiment about different brands. Put Into Practice CRM software helps produce additional sales by storing all the customer information in an easy-access format. With a typical CRM program, new leads are entered into the programs database, and salespeople add notes throughout the sales cycle. After that, its easy for a company to compile reports from this data that help it design a CRM strategy that becomes a custom-tailored profile of each customer. For example, the customer of a high-end womens clothing store may gain 20 pounds an d need to purchase a different kind of dress silhouette. Or a car dealership will note that a customer whose child is approaching 21- and ready to purchase her first car- will be invited in for a test-drive offering a percentage of their vehicle of choice. Customized Relationships Another benefit is that the CRM software can automatically send out emails to individual customers, as designated by the salesperson. For example, a salesperson might program his CRM to send out a thank-you message whenever a customer reaches a one-year anniversary of purchase. The salesperson can also further personalize the relationship by sending an e-card on the customers birthday. Training Staff Is Key Once a company has collected information about a customer, its imperative that the company train its salespeople and other employees in using the profiled information to keep the customer relationship strong. A salesperson is not the CEO of the company but is the face of the company. The role a salesperson plays is important in any CRM program. fruchtwein often, a customer who runs into a technical or billing problem will phone or email his salesperson instead of calling the customer service team. Thats because the customer already has a relationship with the salesperson, has bonded with and, most importantly, trusts that person Its always safer and easier to reach out to someone you know than to try to explain your issue to a stranger. And all skilled salespeople know that after-sales customer service is more important than before-sales customer service. The Value of After-Sales Customer Service Although customer interactions can be time-consuming and burdensome for a salesperson, they can also hold the key to future sales. When a salesperson helps a customer solve a difficult problem, its much more likely that the customer will continue to make purchases from that salesperson because a bond has been created. Theres also a very good chance that the customer will sen d friends and family members to that salesperson as well. In the end, this bonding experience and good korrekt of mouth are exactly what a customer relationship management system is trying to accomplish. Its critical that every member of a companys sales team understands and implements its companys CRM strategy. It is one of the key ways a salesperson can be successful, and in turn, make the company successful. Six Customer Benefits Of course, its not just the salesperson and the company that benefits from CRM systems. Customers are better served on a daily basis. Six benefits that provide value include Each customer profile is highly targeted to help ensure customer satisfaction. It allows for improved pricing to meet customer budgets. The customized products and service offerings make purchasing more efficient. The individualized marketing messages (otherwise known as campaigns) make customers feel as though they have a personal shopper.Customers can connect with salespeople on a single platform. The integrated platform helps prevent customer profile error.

Sabotage! When Co-Workers Arent Up To Snuff

Sabotage When Co-Workers Arent Up To Snuff Recruitment is a detail intensive process. It takes time, dedication, concentration and an acute attention to detail. In this business, the small mistakes can mean the difference between closing a absprache and closing a client. If youre not committed to doing the best job every day something has got to give. But what happens if youre bringing the A game every dayonly to deal with a B level supporting cast? Recently I passed a candidate on to one of my clients. It was a candidate that I spoke to briefly after he had been vetted and qualified by my Recruiting kollektiv and he seemed like a good match. Within ten minutes I heard back from my clientthey had already interviewed the candidate. Twice. (sigh) In these instances I automatically assume the candidate was dishonest with us and hid the fact that he had been submitted to the client previously. But ala s, such is not the case. Turns out, he told the Recruiter. The Recruiter simply didnt tell me. After my migraine inducing meltdown I departureed thinkingit was easy to assign the blame to my Recruiter, but where did this break down and what could I to prevent it in the future?Taking Responsibility In many Agency models, there is a line drawn between employees who interact heavily with clients and employees who interact heavily with candidates. In my world, Ive been a hands-on Recruiter for years and still take part in all of my own searches. But as my time is focused more and more heavily in the client world, Ive had to start relying on my recruiting team to help augment my own recruiting efforts. So where does responsibility lay for such a blatant error? Should my Recruiter have told me that the candidate had been submitted? Yes, of course. Should I have gone back over the basics with the candidate before submitting him? Yes, of course. At the end of the day if Im passing a candida te on to my client, then I had better do my homework and cover my own bases. Whether or not my recruiting machine is working at top form, I still have a responsibility to both my client and myself as a professional. If your coworkers arent cutting the mustard youll have to start taking steps to correct the situation. But in the meantime, every level of the life cycle is your responsibility.Training, Training, Training.and more Training Doctors go to conferences and consistently go through training. Realtors have to maintain licenses and take continuing credits regularly. Teachers have to continually recertify and train. But what about Recruiters? Once were out in the business and making money we have a tendency to just put our heads down and keep going. But even great recruiters need a refresher. Its not necessarily about learning new skills (though some training in social recruiting and new recruiting technology is always great) but it is about getting back to basics. Once youve sp ent a good deal of time developing your crucial skills of perception, intuition and speed you can sometimes lose sight of the basics. Quick reminders and training surrounding the basics is always a good tact to take. Recruiters can sometimes resent it, but at the end of the day, its the stupid little stuff that kills deals.Communication So, after you have your migraine and stop spluttering in rage over the lost deal, its a good idea to take a deep breath. Is it a one time mistake or is this a repeat issue? In either case, the right thing to do is communicate. You need to talk to your teammate and let them know what a small mistake has cost. This isnt a venting session, its not a chance to make yourself feel better. Instead, its a chance to prevent the same mistake occurring in the future. Keeping the lines open with your team and making sure that everyone knows what has occurred and how to prevent it in the future is key to your success. So as much as youd like to go box someones ea rs or have a temper tantrum in the middle of the office, resist. Your job now is to protect your future businessand you do that by fixing the problem, not screaming about it.If you work with a team youre going to run into a number of issues over time. Whether its personality issues, office politics or a lack of professionalism youre going to have to deal with it. Why? Because its your business and we always stay professional when it comes to recruiting and when it comes to business. So keep your head up, your frustration down and try to address the problem. Good hunting

5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career Website

5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career Website5 Reasons You Should Create Your Personal Career WebsiteIf youre looking for a job, a great resume is a must. But did you know that a personal career website can increase your chances of being hired? We live in an online world. Even if a classic offline resume is here to stay, most of the hiring managers today take your online presence into account before they call you up for an interview. A personal career website is a great way to show yourself in the best light online. You say you dont know how to code? No problem There are so many website builders and hosted CMS (content management system) sites available where you can create your own web easily even if youre leid a coder. Most of them offer a sortiment of pre-designed templates that you simply just fill in with your text, pictures or links and voil your website is done. If you think you dont have enough content to create a complex website with plenty of subpages, dont worry about that. You can create a great website with only one landing page. Check out ,WordPress, Weebly, Wix, or Squarespace. Why should you have a personal career website? You might think you dont need a personal website because you either dont have that much experience or enough assets to add to your portfolio. Dont worry about that, anybody can have a website. If you dont have extensive experience, your website can serve as a contact page containing little info about yourself with links to your email or social media. You can also create your online resume where you list all your previous work experiences and skills or you build a portfolio page where you showcase all your works. On the contrary, if you have a lot to say, you can combine all of these and create a complex website about the professional (and a bit of personal) you. You can evenlink it to your blog or your photography portfolio page.A big advantage of a personal web is that you can keep your resume brief. If you put a link to your website, be sure the hiring manager is going to check it and hence you dont have to put that many details on your resume. Also, unlike a resume, your personal website is a dynamic place that you can constantly update for new skills or projects.Do you still need more reasons to create a personal career website? Here you go1. People can easily reach youThe disadvantage of a resume is that you send it out privately and usually only a couple of people from the company youre applying for will see it. The thing with a personal website, however, is that it is online and therefore, for everyone in the vast world of internet to see.You might not want to disclose personal information about yourself online. But you dont have to worry. You usually dont really put very personal stuff someone might abuse up there. To reveal information about your professional life is not that much of a threat. On the contrary it might help you because you never know who sees your profile and contacts you . It goes without saying always put your contact information on as well.2. It helps you stand outEven though its quite easy to create a personal website, still many people dont make the effort. So if youput a link to your website on your resume youll appear much more professional. Of course, make sure your website is nicely designed and includes quality content. Because to have a website isnt everything. You have to have a good website. If you have a website, you appear like a much more attractive candidate than someone who doesnt.3.More space to showcase yourselfIt showcases all your work in one place. In order for your resume to be easily legible, you cant really squeeze that much info into a resume. Especially when youre after a creative kind of job, a personal website is a must-have. You simply cannot show enough of your abilities through a resume, even if you list down your skills. For any other kind of jobs, the same applies. A resume is just a brief overview of your professi onal work, but a personal career website can show a lot more from your work to the hiring manager.4. You control your online presenceThis is quite an important thing. Theres been so much talk already about the hiring managers googling the candidates and how they go over their social media sites. If you have a personal website, theyll find all the relevant info about you on it and then dont need to take your facebook inc or Twitter profile that much into account. Of course, you shouldnt give your potential employer a reason to think badly of you based on how you present yourself on social networks. How to Deal at Work When Your Mind is on Something Else

How to Deal at Work When Your Mind is on Something Else How to Deal at Work When Your Mind is on Something Else Over the past few months, I’ve planned a wedding, bought a house, and moved out of my apartment- all while working two jobs. And so, during the workday, instead of focusing on my day-to-day responsibilities, it wasn’t unusual for me to actually be thinking about paint colors, honeymoon destinations, credit scores, event vendors, and endless paperwork. And that made it pretty hard to get any real work done. When you have something big going on in your personal life, it’s nearly impossible to block it out from 9 AM to 5 PM. At the same time, you can’t let it take over your work life, distracting you from your responsibilities and tanking your performance. Instead, I’ve found it best to somewhat meet in the middle. In a few small ways, it’s OK to give in to the distraction. Of course, it’s also important to learn how to stay strong and overcome the temptation to focus entirely on what’s going on outside of the office. Here are a few ways I do both. Give In: Add it to the List When I had a lot going on in my personal life, going to work didn’t exactly take my mind off of it- in fact, it did the opposite. I’d spend meetings mentally going over my never-ending to-do list; if I got a quiet moment at my desk, I’d forgo any focused work and start thinking about upcoming commitments, conversations I needed to have, and personal phone calls I should have returned last week. When your mind is buzzing with outside distractions, it’s OK to indulge in a few minutes of planning to organize those thoughts and to-dos so that you can refocus on your job. But the key is to write it down with the purpose of getting it out of your mind and moving on to other (read: work-related) things. For example, I started several ongoing to-do lists in the back of my work notebook. Then, whenever my workday got interrupted by my wandering mind (I need to buy stamps, track down those old tax returns, address invitations…), I’d jot it down on the list- to tackle later. It’s a simple solution, but getting it out of your mind and onto paper will help you focus on what’s happening now- instead of what needs to happen tonight, tomorrow, and next weekend. Stay Strong: Minimize Your Triggers Whatever it is that’s distracting you, there’s probably something that triggers those feelings. Maybe it’s a text from your significant other, an email newsletter with tantalizing headlines (“The 25 Songs That Will Get Your Guests on the Dance Floor!”), or messages from friends on Facebook, asking if you’re OK or if you could use a drink at happy hour tonight. Believe me, I know how it feels. The minute I got engaged, I was suddenly on a hundred email lists that I never signed up for, all of which sent me daily emails about cake flavors and honeymoon destinations. Seeing those emails first thing in the morning got me excited about planning a wedding- but certainly didn’t get me in the mindset to get some serious work done. So, figure out how to minimize that trigger. Unsubscribe from those lists, save social media checks for your lunch break, or tuck your phone away in your purse or briefcase. Separating yourself from the things that spark your distraction will help you re-establish your workspace as a place you should be, well, working- instead of thinking about your life outside the office. Give In: Let Yourself Have a Lunch Break Take a glance around my office at noon, and you’ll see occupied desks, noses buried in work, and the occasional dejected Lean Cuisine, tossed aside after a few tasteless bites. In other words, lunch breaks aren’t the norm. When I was deep in the trenches of the house-buying process, though, I desperately needed that free hour to look at houses, gather and fax paperwork, and drive to my real estate agent’s office when I inevitably missed a signature line. At first, I let that make me feel guilty. Here I was, traipsing around town, popping in and out of potential houses, while my co-workers kept their heads down and worked through lunch. But eventually, I realized that if I didn’t get those tasks out of the way during my midday break, I’d spend my entire afternoon worrying about when I’d be able to get to them- and subsequently, get no real work done. In the end, allowing myself to use my lunch break however I needed helped me refocus for the rest of the workday. Whether you need that hour to meet with vendors, stop by the post office, sign papers, or just vent to a friend, don’t feel guilty. It’s your lunch break- take advantage of it! Stay Strong: Hold Yourself Accountable One of my former bosses used to have me email him every Monday, outlining my focus for the week, which typically included two to three major projects or goals that I wanted to accomplish. On Friday, he’d check back in for an update. And knowing that a “So, where are you on your goals for this week?” was inevitably coming, I was much more apt to get my mind of personal issues and get my head in the game. If you don’t want to make that kind of arrangement with your boss (or clue him or her in on what’s going on in your personal life), make a mutual agreement with a co-worker. Exchange lists at the beginning of the week, then chat over a cup of coffee on Friday about how you did. (Just make sure you pick someone who will hold you to your commitments- and not just reassure you that it’s OK that you spent the entire week browsing Zillow.) Whatever you’re going through- whether it’s sad, exciting, distracting, or all of the above- it probably won’t stop running through your mind when you get to the office. But you know what? That’s just life. Manage that distraction with a few of these tips, and you’ll stay successful in and out of the office. Photo of woman thinking courtesy of Shutterstock.

Heres a Sample Hourly Employee Attendance Policy

Here's a Sample Hourly Employee Attendance Policy Here's a Sample Hourly Employee Attendance Policy Having a formal written attendance policy that all employees are privy to is essential for most companies. From the expectation that everyone shows up for work and puts in the required hours to the consequences of not showing up, the ground rules set up by an organization should be understood by all employees. Below youll find a sample attendance policy that you can adapt to your company. Attendance Excellent attendance is an expectation of all employees of XYZ Company. Daily attendance is especially important for hourly employees whose customers and coworkers have the expectation of on-time product shipment and delivery. Emergency personal time is made available to employees for such unscheduled events as personal illness, immediate family member illness, doctor appointments, or a death in the family. Emergency Personal Time Employees accrue 2.15 hours of emergency personal time per pay period. On an annual basis, this is the equivalent of 56 hours. Employees may use emergency personal time up to 56 hours. If an employee leaves employment at XYZ Company with a negative accrual balance, hours used yet not accrued will be subtracted from an employee’s final paycheck. The emergency personal time that is accrued at the time an employee leaves XYZ Company will not be paid out. Employees who are using emergency personal time must call and talk to their supervisor as soon as possible, but no later than one hour after the start of their shift. If the supervisor is unavailable, employees may leave a message for the supervisor with a phone number where they can be reached.  The supervisor will then return the call.   Failure to call in on consecutive days will be considered a voluntary resignation from employment at XYZ Company. The number of minutes and/or hours an employee misses- or is tardy for work, from lunch, or from breaks- will be subtracted from personal time accrued. Tardiness occurs when an employee is not at his or her workstation (or working) as scheduled. When an employee misses a punch, the employee should see his or her supervisor immediately. Their time worked will be dealt with as if the employee has just arrived beginning with the moment they report to their supervisor. Time missed will also count as being tardy. Hourly employees may schedule time off, in advance, for such things as doctors appointment, classes, household repair appointments, parent-teacher meetings, and religious events and services- as long as the time off does not adversely affect co-workers or customers. When possible, within ones normal schedule, the employee may make up the time missed during the week in which the time was missed. Employees must have the permission of their supervisor to make up this time. Otherwise, vacation time must be scheduled in advance to cover these events. No emergency personal hours accrued may be carried over into the next calendar year. Consequences of Overuse of Emergency Personal Time The accumulation of 12 tardies in a rolling year (i.e., any consecutive 12 months) is grounds for employment termination. Disciplinary action, that may lead up to and include employment termination, may start when the sixth tardy in a three month period is recorded. Disciplinary action, up to and including employment termination, will commence, for the overuse of emergency personal time, when 56 hours of absences have been accumulated. The disciplinary action will consist of a written warning for the next eight hours missed, then a three-day suspension without pay for the next eight hours missed, followed by employment termination when an employee has used up any hours over 72. Attendance Bonus for Hourly Employees Life events can interfere with work attendance. However, XYZ Company needs employees to use as few emergency personal hours as possible and to avoid tardiness so that XYZ Company can operate the business in an orderly and efficient manner. Therefore,  XYZ Company has established an attendance bonus system to encourage employees to show up for work and be on time. The attendance bonus system is comprised of the following four components: Each employee who uses no emergency personal time and has no tardies in a calendar week will have his or her name entered into the monthly attendance drawing. The drawing is held at the monthly all-company staff meeting. For each week the employee had perfect attendance, they are allowed to enter the drawing. Four employees a month, whose names are drawn randomly, will receive $50.00.Each employee who uses no emergency personal time and has no tardies in a calendar quarter will receive a gift from XYZ Company, with an approximate value of $25.00, in appreciation of their attendance and commitment. Every employee who accomplishes the following attendance record in a calendar year is eligible to receive the stated annual bonus after the end of the calendar year.If an employee misses up to 16 hours and has no more than one tardy, the employee will receive 100 percent of the bonus, or $300.00If an employee misses up to 24 hours and has no more than two tardies, the employee will receive 50 percent of the bonus, or $150.00If an employee misses more than 24 hours and/or has more than two tardies, the employee will not receive an attendance bonus. Employees who do not use their emergency personal hours will be paid for the unused hours at the rate of 110 percent of their straight-time pay after the end of the calendar year. Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) If you or an immediate family member has a recurring medical condition that results in frequent absences, you may qualify for unpaid leave under the FMLA. Please refer to the separate policy covering FMLA. Be advised that FMLA time off must be arranged for in advance and does not necessarily relieve an employee from their responsibilities as set forth in this policy. The Signed Employee Attendance Policy Document I have read and been informed about the content, requirements, and expectations of the attendance policy for hourly employees at XYZ Company. I have received a copy of the policy and agree to abide by the policy guidelines as a condition of my employment and my continuing employment at Your Company. I understand that if I have questions at any time regarding the attendance policy, I will consult with my immediate supervisor, a Human Resources staff member, the Plant Manager, or the President of the company. Please read the policy carefully to ensure that you understand the policy before signing this document. 10 ridiculously smart questions you should ask in a job interview

10 ridiculously smart questions you should ask in a job interview 10 ridiculously smart questions you should ask in a job interview In a crowded job market, the last thing you want in a job interview to be is forgettable. Yet people do it every day with this one mistake: not asking any questions in a job interview.Related from Ladders Don’t say these 5 types of words during a job interview How to answer 5 of the toughest interview questions Here are 7 of the craziest interview questions The mistake is understandable. You’ve been so busy preparing to answer questions, that you’re forgetting to show the curiosity that lets interviewers see what you really want to know.  After all, even if every single one of your responses are flawless and on point, by not asking a question or two of your interviewer you run the risk of coming across as generic.  On the other hand, you don’t want to ask terrible questions. That’s even worse. These questions to ask in an interview can show the person interviewing you how you’re different and why you stand apart from the rest.  Why did you join the company?Mark Phillips, who runs a top office for Sanford Rose Associates, one of the largest recruiting networks in the U.S. had a simple question that could be quite complicated. If the interviewer tells you it was because of vacation days or benefits, chances are good that there isn’t all that much below the surface. If, however, they tell you about the creativity or integrity of the brand, you know you’re potentially going to work for a winner. How does this role further your company’s mission?   Kelly Lavin, chief talent officer for newly launched Canvas, the first text-based interviewing platform suggests you ask this because “While job duties and company culture are important to understand, determining why a company and role exists is just as, if not more, important.” It will also allow you to better understand if you “align with the company’s mission and will feel a sense of purpose in your new role.”Tell me about your most successful employees.   What do they do differently?Believe it or not, this one is almost a trick question for potential employers Lavin says. “The answer to this question will help a candidate understand how a company defines success and what specific behaviors can lead to that success.” In one fell swoop you’ll find out what success means to this company and how you can better achieve it.  What do you expect so meone in this position to accomplish in the first 60-90 days?University of Richmond Career Advisor Anna Young says, “Great candidates hit the ground running, find out how you will be expected to jump in and start contributing to the organization from day one.” And in case you’re wondering, it’s fine to modify the question for an internship and ask about expectations for the first few weeks. What, if anything, in my background gives you pause?Roberta Matuson, President of Matuson Consulting, says this is pretty much the one must ask question job seekers should ask in an interview. She says “By asking this question, you’ll be able to overcome any objections the interviewer might have before you leave the room.” And if you’re smart, you can find a way to combat any preconceived notions by addressing them in a follow up note.  What is the turnover in your company, in the executive suite and in the department, I am interviewing for? Dave Arnold President at Arnold Partner s says as a leading independent CFO search consultant for technology companies, he’s had 100’s of people go out to interview with clients, and he thinks that’s a question worth asking. While people no longer expect to stay at any given job for decades or more, it’s nice to know how long you can expect to stick around if given the opportunity. If the interviewer grows uncomfortable or shares the fact that turnaround at their company is higher than Dancing with the Stars, you might want to think twice before accepting the position.    What are the opportunities for growth and advancement?Young says, “This can help you to understand the structure of the organization and if there are opportunities to move up and advance your career.” It’s also a great way of finding out about different ways to progress or move into different roles “Also, it could help you to learn if they offered continued training or professional development for employees.”If you had a chance to inte rview for your company again (knowing what you know now), what questions would you ask next time?  Ashley White, executive director for Human Resources for APQC, a member-based non-profit that produces benchmarking and best practice research suggested this toughie. This one is slightly sneaky because it also allows you to surreptitiously monitor the interviewer’s hidden signals. Do they suddenly look uncomfortable before spouting the company line? Do they greet this with a giant grin? You might have more answers to this question by what they don’t say, than even by what they do share. What haven’t I asked that most candidates ask?Phillips also suggested asking this question, which sets you apart immediately. On the one hand, you’re lumping all the other applicants together and showing a level of confidence; on the other hand, you’re gaining insight into your potential competitors:  they asked this, but it never even occurred to me.One last thing: so that you don’t spend t he coming days or weeks on pins and needles, it’s always a good idea to ask this next question.  What are the next steps in this process?Young says, “If they haven’t already shared this information, it’s important to ask about their timeline so you’re aware of when you could be notified of a second interview, or a potential offer.” What to ask yourself  Shannon Breuer, President at Wiley Group was once one of 800 laid off at her former job, Shannon now draws on her own personal experience to provide clients with career coaching and transition services. She offers a list of questions you should ask yourself before an interview, and if needed â€" you can flip them and ask the interviewer. What level of work-life balance do you wish to enjoy?   How casual do you like to dress?   Is your ideal employer an up-and-coming small business, or a century-old corporation with time-tested values and a clear path for future promotions?   Do you like the management style of the leadership team?   What are the company initiatives you can stand behind? 10 ridiculously smart questions you should ask in a job interview In a crowded job market, the last thing you want to be in a job interview is forgettable.Yet people do it every day with this one mistake: not asking any questions in a job interview.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The mistake is understandable. How to Answer What Do You Do When Unemployed

How to Answer What Do You Do When Unemployed How to Answer What Do You Do When Unemployed “What do you do for a living?” is among the first questions people ask when introduced socially. When I was unemployed this question made me feel exposed and uncomfortable. Sometimes my self-consciousness made me want to stay home, but I’m glad I challenged myself not to.   You don’t have to turn down social engagements because you don’t have a job. With the right attitude and a little preparation you can continue to embrace your social life, garnering support and meeting new friends during this important time of transition. Life changes perpetually, and the wherewithal you muster during times of transition helps you develop versatility, empathy, resilience and grit. These skills will serve you well, and acquiring them through the rigors of  unemployment is a great way to internalize them. Your professional hiatus is an opportunity for personal growth. You Define You Being unemployed and in the midst of a job search is nothing to be ashamed of; most people have experienced a snap of unemployment at some point. So don’t feel singled out. Make peace with your situation and don’t think that you have to apologize for it or provide a detailed or lengthy explanation to new people you are meeting socially.   You don’t need casual acquaintances to validate you, so don’t outsource your sense of self. Your perspective matters more to you than theirs, and you get to control how you see yourself. Remember why you are coming to this social engagement. You are looking for new friends to connect with because that is truly affirming and validating. You are not looking to be weighed for your worth, so don’t lead with your vulnerability. Arrive Prepared   Comprise an elevator pitch  that captures the basics of your job situation and search. You want your communication on this important topic to be planned, purposeful and brief. This gets you over the hump that employment questions present in a polished and unemotional way. Then you get the chance to ask other people about what they do, which is especially interesting when you are a job seeker.   If you discover that someone you are chatting with might be a good professional contact, initiate a future plan. Perhaps see if you might meet for coffee or connect via social media. While you definitely want to pursue any leads you find, you also want to stick to your goals for the event and keep it light and social.     To that end, give some thought to fun topics you would like to discussa great book you read, a movie you saw, music you love or funny stories about your life. During this transitional time you may have to put some extra effort into preparing for social situations, but that’s OK. Set yourself up for success. Having this go well will give you a beneficial esteem boost. Remember     Your coolness, relevance and relatability exist independently of your professional life, so don’t beat yourself up because you are unemployed. Your life doesn’t stop because one aspect of it is in a transitional phase. Change is good and healthy. The poise and composure that you exhibit during this time matters more than what some random person might think. Don’t go out with the goal of trying to impress someone else; aim to impress yourself.

5 stupid things to stop doing before its too late

5 stupid things to stop doing before it’s too late 5 stupid things to stop doing before it’s too late Scott Ginsberg shares five items from his list of 61 stupid things to stop doing before it’s too late.In my most recent article about interviewing, ” 10 good ways to ‘Tell me about yourself,” I offered a free list at the end about stupid things to stop doing before it’s too late.Since that article premiered, I’ve received hundreds of emails from people requesting the list. And so, I wanted to share five of my favorite tips from that list, along with a link so readers can access the full compilation at their convenience.Stop exposing yourself to harsh, unsolicited feedback. Decide whom to ignore. Feedback is enormously profitable, but only when it comes from people who matter. Otherwise, it’s nothing but procrastination in disguise. Just another confusing, unnecessarily discouraging, undue stress causing waste of energy and tears. My suggestion: Don’t torture yourself over feedback from someone whose opinion doesn’t count. Execution is the byproduct of listening to t he right people while ignoring the wrong people. It’s about trust and healthy impatience. Stop exposing yourself to harsh, unsolicited feedback and start trusting your voice. Demanding excessive reassurance is a one-way ticket to entrepreneurial purgatory.Whose advice have you outgrown?Stop feeding the ego monster. Your mental bandwidth is worth more.Being prolific is more than what we do; it’s what we avoid. It’s an ongoing effort to remove the barriers that stand in the way of production. There arephysicalones, like watching television and going to meetings and attending seminars and getting sucked into the ego vortex of social media, each of which adds unnecessary demands on our time and attention. There arephilosophicalconstructs, like permission and expectation and procrastination and anxiety, all of which add profound pressure and complication to our mental experience. And there arepersonalconstructs, like saboteurs and drama queens and unsupportive friends and constituti onally incompatible partners, all of whom become obstacles that keep us from bringing new life to what might be. And so, the goal is to clean out as much of that plaque as we can, thus freeing up our expressive faculties to focus.Stop living someone else’s mechanical thoughts. Visions are worth fighting for.If you want a make a name for yourself, you have to make your own music. Besides, why sacrifice your life being everybody else’s dream machine? Why acquiesce to the short-sighted pencil pushers who don’t get the joke anyway? Just be wildly selfish. Do it for you. The purpose of creation, after all, is liberation. To make something to call your own. To have a body of work you can point to. To build something nobody can take away from you. Selfishness isn’t just your right; it’s your responsibility. Like my mentor used to tell me, if you’re making art for anybody other than yourself, you’re in for a world of disappointment.Do you have the courage to bet on your vision ?Stop playing small. In the first ten years of my career, I achieved great success as a writer and speaker. The only problem was, I still wasn’t firing on all cylinders. I still hadn’t found a place that drew out my full ingenuity. Too many assets were going unharvested, and it was eating away at me. And I remember thinking to myself, if it’s true that there are skills and talents that I have not yet tapped into to create value, then there must be useful strategies for influencing the environment that I have not yet taken advantage of. And that’s exactly why I started writing, producing, directing and scoring a documentary. Because it broke the pattern. It allowed me to imagine a different world. To create an alternate reality. To gain a new understanding of the universe. To give my hidden talents a more prominent place in my work. To create a new context from which to relate to the world, one that afforded me the freedom to try other approaches to success.Stop wasting your b rilliant mental effort on negativity. I come from a long line of positivity beacons. Fundamentally affirmative personalities who respond to others with of constant chorus of yesses. Relentless encouragers whose immediate optimism makes the people around them think to themselves, I believe in this, I can do this, I’m ready to try this. That’s why it’s so hard for me to wrap my head around negativity. It doesn’t compute with my biology. When I encounter people whose native wiring is to sour conversations, they might as well be speaking another language. I guess I understand the allure. Negativity is easy to find, easy to dispense and even easier to rally people around. And resisting the pull of that force is no easy task. But ninety percent of life is doing things that aren’t easy. And our attitudes shouldn’t be any different. For the full list called, “61 Stupid Things to Stop Doing Before It’s Too Late,” head over to www.hellomynameisscott.com, login with your email and click on the “articles” section.
