I am a Product Manager. What are you

I am a Product Manager. What are you When I first started my job search I was looking for a replacement to what I was: General Manager.  However, I soon realized that I didnt have the experience in years, size of company, size of team, scope of product(s), etc. to compete with other people who had the general manager title.  So, I went back to where I was more comfortable: business analyst or project manager. I had a degree in Computer Information Systems, and an MBA, and had been a general manager for almost two years, but everything I learned was self-taught, with no mentors and no system in place.  I figured it would be a good idea to get what Ill call institutionalized experience not from a university but from the systems within a functioning business. If you asked me then, like now, I would have told you I was passionate about the intersection of technology and business.  How to solve business problems with technology solutions. Because of my early work programming Simplots intranet (which was a lot of fun), I was most passionate about web technologies.  And, I have always been interested in a role within a company that had strategy and vision as part of its functions. When I was searching for business analyst and project management roles, I came across a title that was new to me: product manager.  It turns out that a product manager is like a mini CEO this is the person who owns a product and is responsible for the vision, strategy, execution, marketing, and profitability of a product. Wow you mean I could do all the stuff I wanted to do, even without being the companys CEO? Dont get me wrong CEO is where I wanted to go, but I didnt think that I could be one anytime soon Id have to get more gray hairs.  But this product manager opportunity wow! As you probably know, I never landed a job as a product manager. Instead, I launched The Worst Job Search Ever, and eventually started JibberJobber.  Fast forward to today its almost been eleven years since I got laid off and started this journey.  If any of you have ever been an entrepreneur, youll know that as the years go by, you really question the value that you bring to a corporate environment. As an entrepreneur, you do so many things that you are not sure what you specialize at. A few months ago, I was chatting with a recruiter friend of mine and said you know, if I wanted to get a job, I have no idea what title I would even look for.  You know me what do you think? To my surprise (because I had kind of forgotten about it) and delight, he said You should look for a job as a product manager. Awesome! A recruiter, trained to see what roles people could fill in a company, saw me as a product manager! Over the last few weeks Ive done some searches on product manager jobs in my area, and have been making a list of functions that product managers do.  This compilation is a list that is helping me restructure my role and job and duties at JibberJobber.  Im virtually rewriting my job and duties, and those job descriptions are helping me. I wonder, how many of you would benefit from this type of exercise?  Discovering the right job title for your (a) capabilities and (b) passions and interests, and then drilling down and defining what you actually do in that role, and what the value to the organization is.  This is what I would consider part of a career recalibration a reality check. Its taken me a long time to get to a point where Ive figured I was indeed hireable again, and going through this tactical exercise is helping me understand my value in the market.  For a lot of the people I meet at my presentations, Id suggest this is an important exercise to really understand that you still do offer value, and you still can have fun in your career and that you are not a has-been.  I know that the longer a job search goes, the more you feel that way so do what Ive been doing and start drilling down on the role(s) you would really excel at! Your Success Depends Upon Originality - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Your Success Depends Upon Originality - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career This week the active conversation topic was “Do you fit the mold?” The question brought back not so fond remembrances of when I was expected to “behave as a typical female” relayed by some corporate salesmen who didn’t believe a woman could sell, and by my then friends who more traditionally believed “a woman’s place is in the home”. I never fit the mold because early on I learned to stand up for who I am and to compete where required. I smiled thinking, “When you fit the mold, you become moldy.” Moldy in this case refers to becoming stale. Live as you Following a script, conducting business or even living your life the same as everyone else, will bring you little recognition or reward. It’s when you step out to take calculated risk, try your hand at a venture that sounds exciting, and continue to learn that you begin to find true reward. You soon recognize the real you versus how others wish you to remain. When you are at a stage of your life ready to move on and become the person you are destined to be, this is the point where you truly begin to develop your brand. Confidence to go forth and strike your fortune is usually the make it or break it aspect of your new venture. Usually confidence is the first area one needs to build upon. The second is to forego any notion of giving up. My favorite saying is, “When you give up you will never know what was just around the corner.” The third phase is now that you know what you desire in your career or business, you must prioritize which idea to implement first. Just as you broke the mold for doing what you desire, you must also analyze what everyone else is doing. Ask yourself: • How can I put a different spin on what’s being done? • Of all the ideas out there, what is missing that I may contribute? • What are the best techniques for communicating what I have to offer? Dedication, trial and error, and perseverance are the keywords for implementing the answers to those questions. Going it alone is very, very difficult â€" I can tell you that first hand. What did help was investing in coaching on an annual basis. However, I didn’t begin to truly thrive until I learned to collaborate and help promote others whom I admire. Once this level of activity was reached, ideas began to multiply and business grew at a more rapid rate. Along with it came brand development. Others recognized the speed with which my colleagues and I are able to adapt, implement and move forward. They repeatedly ask how we do it. Therefore, Valeri Bocage, Sharon Hooper and I once again combined forces to create the Entrepreneur’s Business Retreat in the Sonoma Wine Country May 4-7. Everything we learned about moving from obstacles to success; dreaming, believing and achieving; how to utilize all media; and earning a returning and referring clientele will be taught. What Really Affects Your Ability to Make Money - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

What Really Affects Your Ability to Make Money - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Each quarter, our recruiting firm receives upwards of 33,000 resumes from all levels of sales and marketing job seekers from all over the U.S.  Nearly every income bracket, education level and age is consistently represented. Over the course of the past decade, I’ve spent time analyzing why some individuals can sustain on-going monetary success. For instance, why is Sally making 35% more than Bob even though Bob is just as good as employee?   With the right management, Bob could outperform Sally…several times over. What about the CEO of Bob and Sally’s company, Mary who makes over a million a year with stock options that could drive and sustain wealth? In order for job seekers to gain a more firm grasp of the subject, Ive had our recruitment team take a further look into what really affects earning potential. Factors That Are Less Influential On One’s Earning Potential Contrary to popular belief, the following variables had less to do with one’s ability to procure wealth than originally thought. 1. Ambition.  People who make more money want to be more successful than those who do not earn. As a matter of fact, some of the less monetarily successful people whom I meet have great intentions and ambition, but they lack in crucial areas which we’ll discuss. So, in this case, Mary may or may not have wanted to be CEO more, but that’s not what propelled her to another level when compared with her employees, Bob and Sally. 2. Intelligence. People who make more money are more intelligent than those who earn less throughout their career. If you factor out the huge outliers such as that 23 year old tech genius who created the next big app that Facebook buys, natural born IQ is a big equalizer, not of a differentiator. 3. Education.  People who make higher incomes had a better education in college or are successful because of their network. While network is a factor is one’s ability to succeed, it does not work like most think it does. You can’t network your way to the top. Rather, when you are successful, optimistic and productive, you naturally attract those similar in nature. Thus, a network comes in handy after a certain level of success is achieved and confidence is gained. It does not work the other way around. One can attempt to manipulate their way there, but it’s very difficult (not to mention morally bankrupt) because smart, successful people are not easily manipulated so this route almost never works in the beginning and nearly 100% fails in the end. 4. Management.  An oppressive or supportive boss. If you are the type that allows others to determine your ability to achieve and earn, from the onset you are not on the right path. 5. Profession. While some jobs naturally pay more than others, people who gravitate towards a specific career for the money often find themselves earning at the bottom percentage in that vertical. For instance, young people who want to go into banking for the payoff never find themselves obtaining true wealth. In order to make money, a person must be productive; in order to be productive, one must be happy as optimism has a direct impact on a person’s will power to achieve. The Key Differentiators   1. Attitude.  While it may not appear so on the surface, in most instances, CEO Mary will possess a “let’s go get ‘em” mentality where manager Sally rarely can conjure up that enthusiasm alone and Bob tends to see reasons why things are not possible. This prompts the quitting response. Thus, Mary is worth money to the company because her endurance and ambition are strong enough to get Sally to sign on who, in turn can relay the tasks that need to be achieved by Bob in order for the plan to come to fruition. In a meeting, the three may be analyzing the same business prospect, but often their views are different from one another’s. For those who wish to make more money, it’s imperative to understand that your habits must change before your mind can have the ability to. New Years Resolutions often fail because people try to manipulate their habits with their conscious mind first. 2. Coping Mechanisms.  Everybody is confronted with peril in their lives. Hurdles are all relative, too. What seems like a major setback and reason for quitting by Bob is seen entirely different in Mary’s eyes. Really efficient executives meet hardship with hard work. Middle managers can often handle the stress, but tight deadlines and situations frequently erode manager Sally’s ability to perform at 100%. At this point, Bob is more in-tune to his after work nap and the Italian delivery he is getting later in the evening. Discipline and resiliency are two immense differentiators. Though, they can arguably be correlated with coping mechanisms (and are for this piece). 3. Physical Health.  While this is not always true, there is a correlation between earnings potential and physical conditioning. Companies tend to favor applicants who are fit because they are often the ones that come into the meeting energized, engaged and focused. Additionally, the less experienced hiring managers tend to weigh looks much more heavily than they ought to. Therefore, the gym rats will get a smoother start to their career. In the End It can be argued that it is more one’s heart (gained will power) than it is their head that helps them earn. Here’s the good news. If you have the concentration ability, intrigue and intelligence to make it to the end of this article, you have the foundation and propensity for wealth.

Are your hobbies and interests really that interesting to an employer University of Manchester Careers Blog

Are your hobbies and interests really that interesting to an employer University of Manchester Careers Blog Sometimes it feels a bit like filler on your CV. You scratch your head to think of activities you do outside work and study and you come up blank. What exactly do you put? Its not an absolute must have if you cant say anything sensible or relevant; but most people can! Think about the heading what sounds best? Hobbies Interests Activities  and interests Extracurricular activities 3  and 4 probably sound strongest and have most scope. If you spend all your spare time volunteering this may replace this section entirely.  What can you include? Almost anything but it needs to tie in to the purpose of your application WHY is it relevant, what does it show about you? Sport: playing on a team or leading a team or activity. If a solo sport it could show dedication if you achieve goals or compete. Peer / pass mentoring if you have not included a volunteering section. Staff /student or Hall rep positions. Volunteering or charity fundraising if it does not warrant its own section. Societies if you are or have been involved in organising or doing something. Travel if you gained something from it. Cultural awareness, independence, problem solving, work experience. Simply going on holiday is not enough. Fitness activities like going to the gym, running, yoga etc; can be included but you need to show some reason why they are relevant do they show dedication or achieving personal goals. Perhaps you use them to wind down and gain perspective and a refresh yourself if you have a busy life. Activities like gardening, cooking or knitting for example. If you just mow the lawn, bake the occasional cake and have knitted a scarf, thats nice but why do I want to know?   Do you bake for charity, do you knit for friends and family and challenge yourself with new techniques?   Do you grow your own fruit and veg and teach others how to?   Whats your angle? Learning a new language could go in here until you reach a level of competence, then it and it could go in your skills section. Theatre, dance, drama as long as you are participating in some way not just watching. Writing   for student or local newspapers even blogging can be useful to build a portfolio.   Whats your thing? What do you write about and why? If you are the captain of a team or have a committee role in a society or similar these could go in a positions of responsibility section. CV formats  are be fluid to  reflect your circumstances and the needs of the employer. Dodgy ground I like socialising and going clubbing   with friends.   (Thanks for sharing but really do I care?) I love reading and watching movies. (Well who doesnt. What skill are you trying to tell me about?) If you were part of a book or film group or you had a blog and you critically discussed literature or film it could show skills like critical thinking, the ability to present and defend well reasoned arguments. (As well as showing you are able to make friends and communicate effectively!) Perhaps your passion for film / music / literature / art / computer games is actually pertinent to the job. In which case I want detail. What exactly is your passion and how have you demonstrated this? How do I sell it? What skill do you need to show evidence of? Check the job description.  Which situation will show this off best? Remember CONTEXT ACTION RESULT. What was the situation, what did you do and what was the outcome. Have a look at our example CVs for some ideas. Application forms and interviews You may be asked questions specifically looking at extra curricular activities. Many employers want to see examples of skills from across your life not just work and study. When writing a personal statement on a job application form, think where your best examples of skills come from. You will often need to cover a long list of requirements from the job description so give a little variety in where you choose to take those examples from. Is your hobby your life? For some people their extra curricular activities are the biggest part of their life. Their education or job is there to perform a function its not what they live for. The trick is to ensure that those strong examples of skills that some people get through part time jobs or internships come from your sport or interest. Just be aware that the person employing you needs to know you will commit your energy to this job. So its a good idea to talk about how you have balanced demands and ensured that your education or work commitments were not affected. Top 10 High Demand Freelance Skills for 2020 CareerMetis.com

Top 10 High Demand Freelance Skills for 2020 Gone are the days when freelancing just meant an alternative for those who could not find jobs. While once it was a euphemism for job-hunting, now it is a whole career path in itself. More and more individuals are now choosing self-employment since it offers them greater autonomy. Moreover, companies too are choosing to add independent freelancers to their roster. In fact, freelancers are expected to make up a majority of the US workforce by 2027.You might wonder why companies love hiring freelancers so much. The reason is that they are more cost-effective and offer specialized skills. And that’s the key element here that you need to focus on â€" specialized skills. One of the disadvantages of an increasing population of freelancers is that there exists a huge number of them who offer the same skills. If a huge chunk is offering the same skill, it isn’t really a specialty anymore.evalAnd this is exactly why you need to set yourself apart. You have to ensure that you are unique an d offer distinct skills that are in demand but not commonly found. So make a New Year resolution to learn a new skill that is beneficial for you.You can choose from this list of the top 10 skills that are going to be in high demand for freelancers in 2020. Some of the skills are ones you might expect to be fairly common by now. But you’ll be surprised to know that there aren’t many freelancers out there who are adept at them.1) Virtual AssistantThe name is pretty explanatory for this one. The trend of hiring virtual assistant freelancers has only recently caught on. But don’t think that being an assistant isn’t a skill that doesn’t require any training or specialization!Original Image Source â€" Depositphotos.comYou need to brush up on several skills under the broader term of ‘Virtual Assitant’, such as excellent communication skills. Since you won’t be meeting and discussing tasks in person, it’s vital that you understand all the information virtually to keep thing s running smoothly. You also need to be well-versed in executing administrative tasks such as conference calls and writing letters and emails.2) Writing and EditingThere is always someone out there who needs you to write a term paper, news article, script â€" the list goes on. This is why polishing up on your writing skills will never let you down. With the huge demand for fresh content, you’ll never run out of writing projects any time soon.Even if you don’t want to be the one writing, you can always edit. However, editing is not to be taken lightly. You need a sharp eye and extreme attention to detail. Chances are, people aren’t going to send you small articles to edit. Instead, it’ll be more like entire books and play manuals! And not to mention, you’ll have to stick to a deadline as well because most documents are time-sensitive affairs.evalOne thing about writing and editing is that it gets easier over time. The more you do it, the less time you’ll take.3) Graphic D esignWith the rise of the startup culture, there is a great demand for freelance graphic designers. This is because startups prefer hiring designers who are willing to work on a project basis. But you might be scared to venture into graphic designing because you’re thinking, “I’m not creative at all”. However, lucky for you, you don’t have to be! Graphic designing is a skill after all, and any skill can be learned.Photo Credit â€" fakecrow.comYou need to focus on strengthening your knowledge about design principles. There are also numerous applications that you should be proficient in, like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. And for those who naturally have an eye for design, then they should hone that skill to take on freelancing projects.evalOne important thing for freelance graphic designers is that they need to build up a portfolio for themselves. That’s what companies are going to look at and decide if they want you or not. So put together a portfolio of you r top 4-6 design projects.4) SpreadsheetsWith spreadsheets, companies have to sift through rows and rows of data to find something meaningful. That is a very time-consuming process, which is why they prefer outsourcing the task to freelancers.Knowing how to work spreadsheets is the one skill that never seems to go out of style. As long as data remains relevant Apart from all these, a key skill for any customer service representative is knowing how to extract valuable information from the random information customers throw at them. Customers might not clearly communicate their problems to you. But you need to be skillful enough to understand what they’re trying to say. It sounds tricky, doesn’t it? This is why opting for customer service isn’t for everyone.6) Online Video CreationA major chunk of online marketers uses video content since it’s clearly more engaging. But creating such appealing videos is no easy task. It requires learning several applications, the most prominent one being DaVinci Resolve. You also need to constantly keep learning, because there’s always some new trend that attracts more engagement. For example, the current trend that is continuing into 2020 is motion graphics. Moreover, video creation is also linked to social media marketing. With the continuous popularity of platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, companies require video content that specifically targets social media. So as a freelancer, you can choose to market yourself either as an online video creator or specifically as a social media video creator.evalSimilar to graphic design, freelancers learning the video creation skill need to make a portfolio for themselves. This should include 2-3 of their best-produced videos. If you don’t want to create videos, you can instead choose to edit them. There exist many jobs for freelancers who know how to edit videos. While this requires the same knowledge of software and tools, it also requires additional expertise. You need to have an eye for detail. This includes noticing and fixing the smallest of things such as the alignment of elements etc.7) Relational DatabasesBig data is all the rage these days. But there aren’t many experts out there who know how to properly deal with such huge volumes of complex data. In fact, big data analytics is one of the most scarce skills found out there. This is why businesses are going to be looking for independent contractors who are experts in relational databases.Keep in mind that this is an extremely technical skill. So jump in only if you know you can see it through to the end. Freelancing in relational databases involves storing and analyzing data to help businesses with key decisions. However, you’ll be working with powerful tools to manage data without having to rely on programmers. You’ll need to learn software such as MS Access. Being proficient in SQL is the minimum requirement if you’re thinking of venturing into databases. Lucky for you, there are sev eral free courses online that provide in-depth knowledge about relational databases and their applications.8) Accounting and BookkeepingThis might come as a surprise to most because why hire someone when you could just use accounting software instead. However, there’s still plenty that software cannot do. For example, tax codes and deductions are an enigma that you can’t solve using the software. Moreover, some small businesses simply can’t afford to invest in software. This is why freelancers who provide accounting services continue to be in demand.Source â€" DepositPhotos.comAs a freelance accountant, you will have to carry out mundane tasks such as supervising, examining and recording the cash flows of your client. All this work can become boring after a while. So only opt to freelance in accounting if you’re excited about it. Otherwise, you’ll start to regret it after a point.Freelancing in accounting and bookkeeping requires great attention to detail. Moreover, you’ ll need to be extremely punctual in regularly updating the booksso you’re ready for tax day. If you’re great at setting and then sticking to a budget, then you should look for bookkeeping opportunities.9) Blockchain DevelopmentBlockchain development has become the hottest skill in the market. Believe it or not, there’s been a 6000% hikein the requirement graph for blockchain development. Since there don’t exist enough Blockchain experts so far, there is a huge opportunity here for freelancers. However, blockchain development is a skill that you should only venture into if you are technically sound. There’s a long list of languages you need to be comfortable with if you want to opt for this particular skill. C++, C#, SQL, JQuery, HTML, XML, and CSS are just the basic requirements on the road to honing the blockchain development skill. You can also narrow down your offering even within blockchain development. Figure out if there’s one aspect you’re good at or want to stick to. For example, you can choose to excel at either creating prototypes or full-blown applications. But before deciding, make sure to go online and check if there are enough job opportunities for what you choose. Even if you’re great at creating prototypes, you might not want to choose that if there aren’t enough jobs for it.10) Low Code DevelopmentAccording to Gartner, mobile apps are projected to have the most impact on business success by 2020. This is why enterprises are now focusing on building apps that are optimized for mobiles specifically.Source :Unsplash.comTo do so, they need to hire specialists who are familiar with low-code development tools. So if you’re going to look into this skill, you need to master software solutions such as Salesforce Lightning. Again, this is one of the more technical skills in demand for the upcoming year. Make sure you can keep up before you choose to freelance as a low-code developer.Another thing to keep in mind is the work environment you’re getting into. Low code development is a very fast-paced environment. You’ll have to collaborate with other professionals to rapidly create and deploy applications. While that is an exciting place to work in for some, others might not be up to the task. So keep that in mind if you choose to grow your resume as a low code developer.Time to Choose a Skill! With the year wrapping up, it’s time to move on to newer things â€" like a new skill perhaps! There’s a wide array of skills you can choose from, ranging from technical skills to some soft skills as well. One thing you have to keep in mind is that each skill has its own set of challenges. Some require knowledge of several software applications, whereas others simply need someone who’s detail-oriented and whatnot. So don’t dive in blindly into a skill without reading up on it a little. If you end up choosing the wrong skill, you might feel a bit overwhelmed. Now that you have a whole list of skills that are high deman d in 2020, which one are you going to select?
